Resizing Multiple Images in Photoshop Using Batch Automation

Has it ever happened to you that you wanted to re-size lots of image or just compress files or even rotate them to use in your blog or online photo gallery? If yes, then did you find that a too tedious or time consuming process?

Oh no! And now you need to do that again. Thank god we have Photoshop and a feature called BATCH AUTOMATION.

Through batch automation you can do amazing things to a large number of files in a short time. For beginners especially photography enthusiast, it could be simple image re-size and compression so that you could upload it online in your gallery.

Did you know that uploading your photographs on social networking websites brings it into kind of public domain (without you even realizing that). So its always better to upload re-sized and compressed (even low resolution photos) or watermarked photos to be on the safer side.

So what is Batch Automation?

Find below the steps to automate batch of photos in Photoshop

First 6 Steps for Batch Automation in Photoshop

  1. Make a folder and put all the original files which you want to resize into it.
  2. Open one of the file to be resized in Photoshop
  3. Click on Window in the top menu and select Action or just click ALT+F9
  4. Click on New Set and name it Resize (or whatever you want)
  5. Click on New Action and Name it Resize for Web (or whatever you want)
  6. Start Recording the Action

Next 8 Steps for Batch Automation in Photoshop

  1. Now if you are resizing then go to image menu in the top navigation and select Image Size or simply press ALT+CTRL+I
  2. Now select width (Usually 800 or 1000 Pixels)
  3. Select resolution (72 if you are looking for file size near 100kb)
  4. Don't forget to select constraint proportion to maintain aspect ratio
  5. Also select Resample Image Bicubic Sharper (Best for Reduction)
  6. Click on OK button and you are ready to go
  7. Now click on Save As in the File Menu or use keyboard shortcut SHIFT+CTRL+S (Always create a separate folder inside the original sized folder which you may name re-sized and save the file in that so that when you automate all files would go into that particular folder)
  8. Go Back to Action Palette and click on Stop Button

N.B. Always remember that files in Batch Automation are always saved in the folder in which you save the image when you are recording your Action

Next 6 Steps for Resizing Image in Photoshop using Batch Automation

  1. Go back to where you have saved your original files and make another folder inside and rename it to Resized
  2. Now go to File in Top Navigation in Photoshop and select Automate and then Batch...
  3. Now Select the Set and Action you just made
  4. In the Source field select the folder where you have your original files
  5. Also select last 2 check boxes (Suppress File Open Options Dialogs & Suppress Color Profile Warning). This is to ensure that no additional dialog box open when you automate your batch of image.
  6. Last step before you click Ok for Automation is to Select Fields in File Naming which could be document name or serial number + extension and then you are set to go


Visit the folder re-size after the process is complete and see the MAGIC!
